Every year, the PIHRA Foundation president awards a special recognition plaque to a board member who has made the most outstanding contributions to the Foundation. Roger Sommer received the 2011 President’s Award as the Foundation celebrated the 20th Anniversary of its founding.
Roger founded the 501(c)(3) non-profit organization with its mission statement as: “Human resource professionals advancing workforce readiness through community service in the greater Los Angeles area.” He was its first president and served in that capacity for more than one-half of its existence.
Several years ago, the Foundation changed its mission statement to the present declaration: “Human resource professionals advancing workforce readiness through community service in the greater Los Angeles area.” Faithfully, he has continued with these changes, constantly sharing his productive ideas with the board.
Roger was behind the writing of the Foundation’s Pinnacle Award winning booklet, “You and Your First Job.” This booklet is being widely used in high schools by eleventh and twelfth graders. It is also being used by many PIHRA members (in transition) since the Foundation is working with those who are searching for new positions.
Roger was also very instrumental in the writing of the Foundation’s newest booklet, “You and Your Next Job.” He was one of its main editors. This booklet has been distributed to the placement offices of all the community colleges in California.
Roger has certainly earned the 2011 President’s Award. The picture below shows Roger receiving the Award from 2011 PIHRA Foundation president, Bill Groenekamp.
