Ground Hog Shadow Day
For the first time ever your PIHRA Foundation will be participating in “Ground Hog Shadow Day” on Tuesday, February 2, 2010. Event host Los Angeles Job Corps is partnering with numerous agencies including Junior Achievement, the Jobing Foundation, SHRM, U.S. Department of Labor, and your PIHRA Foundation – a Platinum sponsor! Local employers will host students to Job Shadow as part of Groundhog Job Shadow Day 2010, a nationwide effort to give young people an up-close look at the world of work by letting them shadow various “career mentors” in their places of work. If you or your company is not available on the 2nd, you can also select another day during the month of February. We are recruiting volunteer companies in the metropolitan Los Angeles area – specifically from Districts: 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 9. 50 employers are needed for this event. District Reps on Foundation Board
If you would like to represent the PIHRA Foundation in your district as a PIHRA Foundation Community Relations Director send an e-mail to Ron Scott at: for a copy of our job description. We are looking for several enthusiastic volunteers!
SHRM reports that for every 100 9th graders:

  • Only 68 graduate on time
  • Of those, only 40 enroll directly in college
  • Of those, only 27 are still enrolled after one year
  • Of those, only 18 will earn an associate degree within 3 years or a BA within 6 years

How will the U.S. compete in the global market within the next 5 to 10 years?

PIHRA Foundation in the Community
The below  is a portion of a letter received by your PIHRA Foundation Board member John Silver (D4) of ITT Technical Institute in Sylmar from Ida Babayan, M. Ed., Program Coordinator for the Glendale Youth Alliance (GYA): “Our event was a total success…thanks to you!

Thank you soooooo much for providing the booklets for our job seeking youth.  We had a huge job fair.  In order for our specialists to prepare the youth for the upcoming job fair, we asked them to come to an informational workshop that covered all they needed to know before they went into the actual interview.  Our specialists used the PIHRA booklets as the teaching tool for this workshop.  We had 40 youth who participated and 50% were picked up by various worksites within the Glendale community.  I even had parents approach me after to workshop to see if they could possibly have a copy of the booklet, since it had been so helpful for their kids. Again, you are amazing…the job your do with the PIHRA Foundation is remarkable…Thanks for all you have done for our GYA participants.”
