Filter Candidates with Video

One of the greatest recruiting challenges I continue to hear from employers focuses on finding a better way to attract the right candidates while filtering out those who are not a good fit. This seems to be HR’s age old dilemma. With so many candidates available in today’s workforce, how do you effectively filter through applicants? I suggest arming them with information. The more candidates know about your company, open positions, culture, benefits, etc., the better chance they have of choosing the right opportunities for them. And when candidates begin self selecting, rather than applying for every job available, your recruitment strategy becomes much more effective. Video is a great way to provide job seekers with the valuable information they need to opt in, or out, of your open positions.

In a matter of minutes a video can take a job seeker inside the doors of your business, introduce them to a few employees, give them a feel for what it’s like to spend a day in a certain position, and offer any information you feel is valuable to a potential candidate. Videos can help engage the types of candidates who would be a perfect fit for your business, as well as deter those who would not be ideal from applying; which saves both parties valuable time. Plus, videos can be used on so many different platforms. From your corporate careers page, to mobile devices, to social media channels like Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube, to your booth at an upcoming job fair; videos are easier to share than ever before.

It’s important to note that more and more companies are embracing video, which means using this interactive media is quickly becoming an industry standard. For example, Forrester Research reported that the percentage of top 50 U.S. online retailers that offer videos on their sites jumped from 18% in 2008, to 68% in 2009. That significant increase suggests companies that are not utilizing this resource, may be viewed as falling behind the times. Candidates are advancing with technology and are coming to expect the latest, most up-to-date information to be presented to them. Offering that information not only helps you to engage the best candidates for your business, it helps you filter out candidates more effectively.
