February 2012 President’s Message

By Richard Propster, SPHR-CA

Mark Twain claimed that it was 19th-century British Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli who first opined, “There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics. “ Be that as it may, I nonetheless want to share statistics with the membership to highlight the activities and participation of your Association and its leadership. In 2011:

  • We hosted over 10,000 participants at PIHRA events
    • 15,000+ educational content hours were provided to 7,000+ participants at over 150 sessions hosted by Districts throughout our five county area
    • 25,000+  content hours of education were provided to 2,000+ participants at over 75 Association-developed events
  •  PIHRA and our Districts facilitated 1,000+ networking hours at 100+ separate networking opportunities
  • District leadership dedicated 1,000+ hours to the administration of their Districts.  A heartening consequence of such dedication is the increasing number of members coming forward and volunteering to serve their Districts

This all looks pretty good, until you consider that there are over 173,000 HR professionals within California; that less than 12% of them are members of SHRM and that less than 3% are members of one of SHRM’s 18 affiliated chapters throughout the State. Finally, consider that PIHRA suffered a net loss of 425 members in 2011 versus 2010 and it becomes obvious that we simply cannot allow such erosion to continue.

The opportunity to broaden our reach is immense. We began the year with a PIHRA® Legal Update that compellingly demonstrated our capabilities, competence and commitment to the HR professional. Will you help us use this incredible launch to spread the value proposition for PIHRA membership?
